John Alexander MacEachern Peacefully and in the loving company of his family, John Alexander MacEachern passed away at the age of 84 on November 24, 2025, in Middleton, Nova Scotia—a community he and his wife of 54 years, Barbara "Moozie," embraced in their retirement 17 years ago after leaving behind the towns of Kleinburg and Nobleton, Ontario, where they spent three decades working and raising their family. No truer are the words than that John was a man of heart. Gentle and kind, yet ambitious and entrepreneurial, he made everyone in his presence feel welcome and at ease. The youngest of three boys, John was born in Toronto with a life-threatening congenital heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, and was not expected to live past childhood. Thanks to the fierce determination of his parents and the skill of cardiologist Dr. Gordon Murray, John underwent groundbreaking surgery in 1945 at age four—the third ever performed and the first in Canada—using what became known as the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt. He would later survive additional heart surgeries and two heart attacks, living a long, full life that defied every early prognosis. In the 1960s, John earned a degree in Hospitality and Hotel Management from Cornell University. His early career took him to The Royal York, The Banff Springs, and Chateau Lake Louise hotels—where he met Barbara. They married in 1971, and that same year, he purchased The Doctor's House, a tearoom founded by his mother. John later expanded it into a 120-seat fine dining restaurant, The Doctor's House & Livery, which continues to operate today in Kleinburg, Ontario. He then went on to open The Captain's House in Chester, Nova Scotia. These ventures reflected his lifelong passion for hospitality and people. He and Barbara developed a lasting affection for Nova Scotia's warmth and community spirit—a bond that drew them back there in retirement. An artist at heart, John rediscovered his passion for painting later in life, moving from oils to watercolor and egg tempera. His home studio became a sanctuary of creativity, leaving behind over 200 works that reflect his curious and expressive spirit. He also loved to write, publishing two mystery novels (The Hatrick Murders and The Blood of Art), several short stories and screenplays, and participating in a local writers' group until just weeks before his passing. A lifelong learner, John truly lived as a student of life and art. John is lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara; daughters, Lisa Turner (James), and Jennifer MacEachern; sons, Gordon "Drew" (Samantha Banting), and Jeffrey (Wendy Doan); and grandchildren Macey, Rhys, Payton, Noelle, and Grayson. He was deeply loved by his extended Sims family, with whom he shared countless summers at Cedar Point, Lake Simcoe. Many have expressed gratitude in John's final days for the quiet impact he made in their lives, his ability to listen, to lead, to open his home and heart to others. He was a tireless advocate for community, creativity, and compassion, and with Barbara by his side, he lived a life to be celebrated and admired. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, December 2nd at 2:00pm, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 45 Main St. Middleton, NS. All are welcome. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live streamed on the Funeral Home website main page under Live Stream beginning at 1:55 pm AST.
