Obituary

MORSE, John Ronald Ron - 86 of Berwick, formerly of Middleton. It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather that a man ever could be. Ron passed away Saturday, December 25, 2010 in Grand View Manor, Berwick after he fought a very couregous battle with a lengthy illness. Born on May 13, 1924, at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, he was a graduate of Kings County Academy (KCA), Kentville and Horton Academy, Wolfville. He was a WWII veteran, having enlisted in the RCAF at the age of 19 in February 1943 and serving as an air gunner attached to 207 UK Sqdn from 1943 to 1945. At the time of his enlistment he was employed at the Nova Scotia Apple Marketing Board, Head Office in Kentville. In November 1943 he went overseas where he saw much action. He made 17 flights (1/2 tour) over Germany, Russia, Holland, etc. During a raid, F/Sgt J. Ronald Morse (mid upper gunner), lost his right eye (age 20), when a shell exploded in the turret of his Lancaster Bomber while flying over Germany on the night of Sept 9, 1944. He was the only member of the seven man crew struck by pieces of exploding shell. The next mission after he was wounded, all of his crew members were reported as missing over the North Sea. After hospitalization, he was posted near London. After a 30 day furlough, he reported back to RCAF HQ where he underwent further treatment. He was in the air crew of the RCAF for two years, including 16 months overseas, receiving a medical discharge - May 1945. Upon completion of an insurance course, he became a General Sales Agent for Nova Agencies Ltd, Insurance, Kentville until 1948. The son of the late Jack Hibbert Morse and Myrtle Annie (Neary) Morse and grandson of the late John Edgar Morse (founder of J.E. Morse Co,{1870}), Ron married the love of his life Louise Evelyn (Palmer) on July 31, 1946, sharing 64 years as husband and wife and soul mates. In 1948 he went to work as an accountant for Milne's Garage Ltd., New Minas and for Marshall Motors in Kentville early 50's. In 1956, he joined Canada Customs in Middleton, retiring as Superintendant for Valley, Yarmouth, South Shore (Lunenburg, Chester & Shelburne) July 1986. While Ron resided in Kentville , he was a volunteer firefighter with the Kentville Fire Department. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No.1, Middleton and a member of the United Ostomy Assoc. of Canada Inc. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife Louise (Palmer),Berwick; daughter Judy (John) Himmelman, Middleton; grandchildren, Cathy (Clint) Slaunwhite, Lower Sackville and Curt Himmelman, Lower Sackville; great grandchildren Madisyn and Mason Himmelman, Lower Sackville; sister Gloria Lorraine (Malcolm "Mac") Denton, Courtney, BC. Family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Grand View Manor, Berwick and to Dr. Peter Goddard for his care. Cremation has taken place. At Ron's request, a private family interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton, Rev. Danny Smith, officiating.
