Obituary

WARD, John T. (Jack), CD, CF (Ret'd), Middleton, died Friday, November 3, 2017 in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. He was born in Victoria Vale, Annapolis County in 1921, the son of Perley C. and Vera (Parker) Ward.  He attended high school at MacDonald Consolidated School in Middleton.  He saw active service overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.  After the war years, he continued his education graduating from Acadia University (B.Sc.) and the Nova Scotia Technical College (B.E.) in Civil Engineering.  In 1951, he rejoined the Canadian Forces air element as a Technical Officer.  He served the post war forces in many areas across Canada as well as overseas in France and Germany.  In 1967, on the occasion of Canada's one hundredth birthday, he was presented with the Canadian Centennial Medal "in recognition of valuable service to the nation".  He retired from the forces in 1970.  He enjoyed sport fishing and hunting.  As an experienced canoeist and a keen outdoors man, his related activities ranged across Canada including numerous wilderness areas of Nova Scotia, around the extensive marsh lands of southern Manitoba, in the foothills of Alberta and the mountain regions of northern British Columbia.  He was profoundly moved by the shrill bugle of the bull elk during the fall rut in the Rockies, the weird yell of the loon on a remote Nova Scotia lake, or the chatter of wild water fowl during autumn migration.  As a resident of Dartmouth for many years, he was employed in the engineering design office of the Nova Scotia Dept. of Housing.  He moved to the Annapolis Valley in 1978 where he was involved in gardening, honey bee culture, and the management of a one hundred acre wood lot situated in the community of Victoria Vale.  He considered himself fortunate that over a life time he was able to experience a wide range of circumstances such as, growing to manhood through the bleak years of the great depression of the 1930's, surviving the dangerous events of active military service during the Second World War in Europe, attending university after the war years in the 1945-1950's, working with fellow engineers on a variety of construction projects across Canada and in Europe with both French and German professional's and finally to enjoy a long retirement on his Victoria Vale, NS property. Family gatherings were treasured by Jack. During his retirement years, he and wife Grace traveled extensively throughout western Canada, eastern and western United States, Great Britain and Ireland.  He was a member of the Military Engineers Association of Canada and a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.  He is survived by his wife, the former Grace Dorothy Hatt; son, Ralph (Rosemary), Greenwood, NS; daughters, Anne Marie (Don) and Catherine (Doug), both of Halifax, NS; and grandchildren, Kira (Khothatso), Aiden and Bronwyn (Kevin); great grandchildren Adina and Zahara. Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m., Monday, November 6th at the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902 825-3448.  A committal service will take place at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Pine Grove Cemetery or to any charity would be appreciated.
