SHAW (Merry), Joyce Evelyn- of Middleton, passed away January 21, 2012 in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown surrounded by her family. Born April 17, 1933 in New Albany, Annapolis County Joyce was the eldest daughter of Lewis and Blanche Lillian Merry. In 1951 Joyce married Clinton Shaw and moved to North Williamston where they made their home for many years prior to moving to Middleton. Employed with the Royal Bank of Canada for 30 years, Joyce retired in 1993 as Senior Personal Banking Officer. For several years she served as President of the Royal Bank Annapolis Valley Ladies Forum and as Vice- President. Joyce was a member of the Middleton United Baptist Church where she served on many committees, including chair of the Board of Finance, Building Fund and Treasurer. As a member of the social committee she chaired a number of fundraising initiatives, including several Victorian High Teas. Joyce served as a Director of the Baptist Foundation from 2003-2006. Her volunteer activities included the Soldier's Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, I.O.D.E. Rummage Sale, and canvasser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In 1989, she received the Defender of Life Award for her work with the Valley Action for Life of which she was a member since 1977. In 1992 Joyce was awarded the Governor General Commemorative Medal in recognition of significant contributions to her community and to Canada. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family. Joyce was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren. She is survived by husband Clinton; daughters Valerie (David) Thomas, Wolfville and Laraine (Boyd) Jagoe, Port Williams; sons, Jeff (Cindy) Shaw, Moncton and Chris (Carolyn) Shaw Cottage Cove; grandchildren, Andrew Thomas, Ashley Thomas, Kathleen Jagoe, Adam Jagoe, Chelsea Shaw and Joseph Shaw; brother, Edwin(Carol) Merry, Halifax. Joyce was predeceased by sister, Betty Falle. The family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the staff at Mountain Lea Lodge. Visitation will be held 2-4PM Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448. The funeral service will be held 2:00PM Thursday, January 26, 2012 in the Middleton Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Smith and Rev. Norman Hovland officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Albany.
