Karl Iven
Burbidge
May 6, 1932 – June 6, 2021
Karl Iven Burbidge passed away in Heart of the Valley Long Term Care Center, Middleton on June 6, 2021 at the age of 89 due to complications of Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia. Born in Brickton, Annapolis County, at the family farm, to Norman and Alma (Banks) Burbidge, he started his working life as a heavy equipment operator for Standard Paving. His work took him over much of Nova Scotia and into Ontario during the 1950s and 60s with the expansion of road paving. On Christmas Eve, 1970, he was struck by a car while assisting a stranded motorist in a snowstorm. After five months in hospital, he could not return to heavy equipment work. He went back to school and obtained his stationary engineer ticket and worked in the boiler room at Soldiers Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1997. "Applejack" enjoyed his CB community and spent much time over many years talking with his friends on the radio. A special thanks to Mike "Pool Shark" Johnson for his help to keep that connection as Karl's health failed. Karl is survived by his wife Jennifer, daughter Cheryl (Bob), Hampton; grandchildren Megan (Richard) Armstrong, Spa Springs; Matthew Medicraft, Nictaux; Michelina (Tod) Paley, Medicine Hat; great grandchildren, Hayden, Rylee, Jonah, Charlotte, Liam; and sister Kathleen (Les) Hake, Brickton. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Minnie, Clare, Elva, and Hazel; brothers Burpee, Charles, Aubrey, Ralph, Stanley, Stewart, Frank, Ervin, Rupert and great granddaughter Morgan. The family would like to thank Dr Paul MacLean, Karl's longtime family physician, as well as the staff at Heart of the Valley and Dr. Michele Saxon for their care over the last five months. Due to current gathering restrictions a service with interment will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448.
