Obituary

Age 87, South Berwick , Kings Co., on May 4th, 2023, Kelsey Wanita (Conrad) Herman, devoted wife, and mother, gained her wings and went to fly with the angels.

Kelsey was the youngest daughter of the late Wilford and Gertrude (Drew) Conrad. She was born in Berwick on November 5th,1935. She is survived by her son, David (Carol Ann) Herman of Berwick; daughters, Elizabeth Lamb (Byron) of Middleton; Krista MacInnis (Peter) of Markham, ON.; Shirley Oliver of Winnipeg, MB; daughter-in-law, Sylvie Herman of Edmundston, N.B.; sisters-in-law, Pauline Conrad and Yvonne Conrad, both of Berwick.

She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Jerry, Rubybeth, Brendan, Jillian, and Tyler; step-grandchildren, Amanda, Amy, and Ally; along with her great grandchildren, Declan, Sophie; niece, Donna Conrad; nephews, Brian Conrad and Roger Thomas, as well as extended family.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Warren; sons Kris and Daryl; and daughter-in-law, Pepper; sister Faye; brothers Carmen and Delbert.

In June of 1958, Mom and Dad were married and moved to South Berwick where many memories, laughter, and five children were born. Together, they provided love and stability to their children and foster daughter, Shirley.

Mom spent time as an educational assistant at the "old" Berwick School, where she was well respected by everyone she worked with. She was an active member of the South Berwick Women's Institute. In addition, she was a caregiver for seniors at Eldridge's Rest Home. Once all her children had left the nest, Mom's passion for caring for seniors took root as she and dad opened their home to care for seniors.

In her younger days Mom was proud to work at her family's canteen in Berwick. She could be seen making burgers, pies, and milkshakes, leading to her well-known love of sweets. A visit to the Herman household was likely to involve several offers of sweet treats from cheesecake to peanut butter balls. Needless to say, there was always shenanigans over who would capture the last morsel!

Organizing family time was important to Mom. Whether it was summer camping trips in the travel trailer, or Sunday outings to McDonald's with all the fun of fitting six children in the car. She loved it all! She was our rock and has left us with many wonderful memories.

In the last few years Mom resided at Orchard Villa in Middleton. She enjoyed visits from both young and old, especially when sharing a slice of pizza from the local Pizza Factory or indulging her sweet tooth with molasses cookies or coconut cream pie. These moments brought a lovely smile to her face which will never be forgotten by her companions, family, and friends.

Music was a big part of Mom's life bringing her joy, laughter, and love. Charlie Pride, Don Williams, and Kenny & Dolly were among her favorites. You could often catch her tapping her toes and singing along to the music. Mom loved hearing her horoscope, watching her daytime soap (Y&R), receiving packages from her family in Toronto, and playing checkers with Shelagh. She had a devilish sense of humour and enjoyed hearing jokes, even the occasional "naughty" one. More than anything, Mom loved talking on her cell phone. In fact, she loved her phone so much, we lost count of how many phones she went through!

Mom adored animals both big and small. She was delighted when furry visitors, Max, Tyson, and Yam, came for a visit and a treat. Throughout the years, one of her favorite memories to share was about a suitor who was greeted by her beloved collie Rennie nipping at his heels. She always paused for a moment and, with a tinkle in her eyes, softly laughed and said ... "But I married him anyway!"

Mom will be remembered for her love, strength, determination, and sense of humour.  With heavy hearts we say goodbye to a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. We take comfort knowing that Mom has been reunited with Dad and their two sons in heaven.

The family would like to thank: the caring staff at Orchard Villa Middleton; Dr. Todd; Dr. Flynn and staff at Valley Optometry; and the team at Valley Regional Hospital. A special thank you to Mom's cherished companions; Shelagh, from Senior Homecare by Angels, who has been visiting with mom since 2021, Robin, Tracey, and Kathy, who provided friendship, love, and support in the last year. Your compassion and devotion to Mom meant the world to her and us.

Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service for Warren and Kelsey took place at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023,  in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville, with  Rev.
