Obituary

Kimberley Anne Sheppard, 57, of Hubley, NS passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 16th, 2021.  Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the Grace Maternity Hospital, she was destined to return there for most of her career. She was the daughter of Margaret Rose (Langille) Sheppard and the late Albert Walter Sheppard. With her father Albert in the Canadian Air Force, the family had the opportunity to experience different cultures and communities including Shearwater (NS), Comox (BC), Baden-Soellingen (Germany), and Greenwood (NS). Kim loved to travel and was able to see much of Europe and Canada and visit the US and Africa. Kim was a compassionate, caring soul with an inquisitive, bright mind filled with every detail. She could always be called upon to answer the question, "Do you remember...?" She believed that all people should be treated with dignity and compassion, and this shone through her life and career. Kim studied Nursing at the Victoria General Hospital, following in her Aunt Gloria's footsteps, received her RN designation in 1984 and was awarded the St. Mary's Medal for highest academic standing in her class of 95. She worked at Oceanview Manor in Eastern Passage, caring for those living in long term care, including her Great Aunt Myrtle. In 1987, Kim was reunited with her older sister, Lynn and brother-in-law David in Toronto, Ontario. David would come to be her favourite handyman helper in later years. She was so appreciative of her father's and David's helping hands that supported the dream of her own home. She worked as an OR nurse in the neurosurgery department at the Hospital for Sick Children.  She loved working with children and infants, a love that brought her to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax when she returned to Nova Scotia in 1990.  She worked for many years in the NeoNatal ICU and the Pediatric ICU at the IWK and loved her babies very much. She was professional and compassionate, and always put her patients and their families first. Working in the ICU was a challenging and very rewarding career for Kim.  It filled her heart with joy and love. She returned to school at Dalhousie University to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while she worked in Halifax. She signed up to work for the NS Air Medical Transport team at their inception and was thrilled to become part of this experienced technical team. It was an exciting time in her career, and she enjoyed it thoroughly, bringing the helicopter and team home to the Annapolis Valley in 2001 for the Kingston Lions Steer BBQ event. She flew to Northern Manitoba, the Yukon, Rankin Inlet and other communities to nurse in very northern Canada. She gained a great appreciation of how people live and the help they need in remote communities, and her desire to help people grew even more. When she retired from active floor work, she brought her varied expertise to the IWK Poison Centre. She played many leadership roles in helping develop the Poison Centre to its world class status and helped so many who reached out for help in their darkest and most difficult times. During the Covid-19 pandemic, her expertise, diligence, and compassion were so important to a world seeking help. Despite her own health problems, she continued to work past retirement age and retired just this spring, only to step back in to help as a part time nurse. Although devoted to her career, she was just as devoted to her family. Kim and Lynn shared a great sisterly bond, and both brought their complementary attributes together to make family time an important and cherished time. Kim and her mother Marg shared a special relationship that included Kim coming home for quality visits, and many meaningful conversations in person and over the phone. When her father was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2008, she stepped in to help with his neurosurgery and recovery and supported her mother through all of the challenges. Her father lost his battle with arthritis just two years ago and she was by his bedside when he passed away. Like her father, she was a lifelong sports enthusiast. She grew up as an avid baseball player, soccer player, badminton player, gymnast, skier, and swimmer. She was a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and never, ever missed watching the Olympics. She was known to plan her vacation around the Olympics schedule every two years. She loved family and friend celebrations of all varieties, although Christmas was her favourite. She loved to gather with family for the holidays and planned extensively so we would be able to spend the time together. During the pandemic, we were able to squeeze in an isolated vacation for family and it was a cherished memory she held this past year. She developed many friendships over the years, people who were in very caring work like herself. She treasured those friends and was always willing to lend a listening ear and offer supportive advice. In 1990, when her nephew, Matthew was born, she poured her love and care into his life. She was a part of his life every year, and particularly enjoyed our visits to see her for basketball games, swimming, and theater. It gave her great joy when Matthew met and married Monica Franey. She supported them in Halifax during a difficult and sad time in their lives and was so happy to be able to help them. When their daughter, Cora Lynn, was born her joy was complete. Kim was an animal lover and particularly loved her special fur babies, Bailey, Simon and Jasper. She cherished her cats and held a special place in her heart for Matthew and Monica's incomparable dog, Ophelia. Kim is dearly missed and survived by her mother, Margaret Rose (Langille) Sheppard , of Greenwood; her sister, Lynn (David) Roscoe of Clarence, NS; her nephew, Matthew (Monica) Roscoe; and beloved great niece, Cora Lynn Roscoe of Berwick, NS.; her aunts, Dorothy Power of Dartmouth, NS and Lorraine Saunders of Vancouver, BC; her uncles, Ken (Pansy) Sheppard of Bishop Falls, NL and Hedley (Isabel) Sheppard of Peterview, NL. She was predeceased by her father, her twin godsons, Amos and Ivan Roscoe, and many aunts, uncles and cousins with whom she spent time with over the years. We cherish the time we were able to have her on this earth with us. The funeral will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Middleton, NS, at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 26, with the Reverend Canon Lynn Uzans officiating. Pandemic precautions are in place, so guests require masks and hand sanitizing. Interment at Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown will follow the service. Family flowers only.
