Obituary

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Laurie Ann (MacKay) Armstrong of Aylesford, Kings Co., NS, announce her sudden passing on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at home.

Laurie was born in her family home in Truro, NS, on August 14, 1941, to the late Lawrence "Laurie" and Margaret (Stevens) MacKay.  She grew up in Truro and worked for a brief time in Moncton, NB, before eventually settling in the Annapolis Valley.  She is survived by her three sons, Leander (Sherry), Andrew (Margo) and Daniel (Tammy) Armstrong, all in the Aylesford area; daughter, Melissa (Doug) Connors of Sydney; grandchildren, Krista, Holly, Mitchell, Matthew, Nicholas, Ethan and Grayson; many great grandchildren; sister, Shilah (the late Paul) Gertridge; brother, Steven (Margaret) MacKay; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Arlene (Randy) Skaling.

Laurie was well known in her community for her active political engagement and volunteered for most of her adult life for the PC Association of NS, from whom she was recognized with a lifetime achievement award in 2022.  She always encouraged her family to make sure they voted in every election, always saying she didn't care how we voted, as long as we cast a ballot.

She was a patriotic, proud Nova Scotian and volunteered and was involved in several community organizations over the years, including the Canadian Cancer Society, Women's Institute of NS, St. Mary's Home and School Associations, and served on the board of directors for many years for the Beehive Adult Services Centre.

Her greatest joy, however, was found in her family, and she was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved to attend large family gatherings, and in later years enjoyed watching the younger great grandchildren run around after a family meal.  She had many fond memories of family picnics at the shore of the Bay of Fundy on warm summer days.  A devoted mother, her home was filled with many photos and trinkets from her immediate family as well as items from her family home in Truro, which she would show off with pride whenever she could.  She loved a good political discussion, baking a new recipe, a good square or cookie, a nice thick novel, and watching a good television show, tennis, or cheering on any Canadian hockey team playing on TV.  She was a wonderful mother who devoted her time to raising her children, helping and supporting them, and will be dearly missed.

In accordance with Laurie's wishes, a private family service will take place at a later date.  Donations in her memory can be made to the Beehive Adult Services Centre in Aylesford, NS.  The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind messages. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
