Obituary

DOE, Leo Nelson ~ age 79 years ~ passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024.  Leo grew up in Peace River, Alberta with his parents and brother Henry "Hank".  He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1962.  Commencing with HMCS Mackenzie, Leo travelled extensively around the world ~ Panama Canal, San Francisco, Suez Canal, Hong Kong Harbour.  In later years, he was stationed at various military bases ~ Portage La Prairie, Alberta; Cornwallis, Nova Scotia; Barrington, Nova Scotia, Cold Lake, Alberta; Gander, Newfoundland; North Bay, Ontario; CFS Alert; deployed to Croatia with United Nations Protection Force; and then his final posting was at Greenwood, Nova Scotia.  Leo's athletic accomplishments included CAF Pearkes Cup soccer championship and numerous cycling events.  He was an avid long-distance runner (Boston Marathon) and an accomplished swimmer.  In his retirement, he continued running, swimming and cycling and also pursued his interest in researching historical events, science and mathematics and taught courses at the college in Prince Edward Island.  Leo is survived by his wife, Kathy.  Cremation has taken place.  A military burial at sea to be held at a later date.  Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448.  Online condolences or memories you may wish to share with the family may be made by visiting:  www.middletonfuneralhome.com
