Obituary

SMALL, Leonard Freeman, P. Eng . It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Leonard Small. Dad was born in Tiverton, Nova Scotia, to the late Lauriston and Myra (Ring) Small on June 29, 1926. He grew up in Tiverton and attended Tiverton School graduating grade 11 in 1942. He then went on to Acadia University to do pre-engineering. While at Acadia during the war he was in the R.O.T.C. He graduated from Acadia in 1947 and then attended Nova Scotia Technical College graduating with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1949. Upon graduating, he went to Ontario to work for a couple of different companies in the engineering field.

Leonard married Rowena Bouchie in 1950, and they settled in Brantford, Ontario where he worked for the Cockshutt Farm Equipment Company. He worked there until his father died suddenly and they decided to come home to take over operations of Small Bros Fish Plant, which his father had built. But things were difficult in the fish business, so he bought a truck and backhoe and did contract work for the N.S. government putting in new culverts on the main road on the island. Later he worked for the N.S. Department of Fisheries as a vessel construction inspector and traveled extensively throughout southwest Nova Scotia. All the while he still operated the fish plant in Tiverton.

In 1970 he decided to build a new processing plant, so he gave up the job with the government. He used his engineering skills to design and construct this new plant with all the refrigeration and processing equipment and employed almost all local people to do the job. Pirate Cove Fisheries was opened in 1972. He operated these two plants until he decided to retire in the mid 80's and the business was sold since none of the children were interested in taking it over. He was a member of the Tiverton Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia where he was awarded a lifetime membership on Sept. 29, 1994. After retiring he and Rowena traveled extensively and enjoyed life together.

Leonard is survived by three sons, Rick (Mildred), Russell (Beverley) and Stephen (Phyllis); 10 grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Adam, Natalie, Bradley, Timothy, Tiffany, Allison, Kristin and Stephen; 14 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Rowena; his sister, Helena and brother-in-law, Dr. Perley Outhouse.

Visitation for Leonard will take place from 6-8 p.m., Friday evening in Tiverton Baptist Church, from where the funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 26, 2025, with Pastor Tim Long officiating.
