Obituary

LAMB (Lonergan), Margaret Alveretta - Age 94, passed away peacefully at home in Somerset surrounded by family, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, after a 20 year battle with dementia. Margaret was born in South Berwick, Kings Co., N.S., on March 30, 1930, to the late Joseph "Joe" and Truth (Stephens) Lonergan. She attended school in South Berwick and graduated from Kings County Academy in Kentville. After high school, she completed her hairdressing course at Dunham's Salon in Berwick. Following the completion of her course she opened her own business, Marg's Beauty Salon in Aylesford. On April 21, 1950 she married the love of her life, James Lamb. She became a devoted wife and a mother to eight children. In addition to being a busy mom she continued to have a devoted clientele of ladies who came to her home salon. Mom continued hairdressing until the age 74. As all good moms and a hair stylist she of course made sure her children and grandchildren had good hair. There are many stories of french braids, some a tad tight but not a hair out of place. A busy family and business would have been enough but Mom worked along with Dad to build a successful dairy farm making sure she did a final inspection, cleaning windows, dusting any missed cobwebs in the barn which were fine as they were but she wasn't taking any chances when a dairy inspection was coming up. No doubt her care contributed to their success in winning awards. However, Mom played a much more strategic role in the business as the book keeper, working well into the evenings to make sure things were in order and accounted for, which supported Dad in his goals. As we reflect on our Mom's life we would have to place her in the league of Superwoman. Like many ladies of her generation who did laundry by hand, made meals, had a garden, canned food, and so much more, Mom found time to be involved in her community. When her children were going to school, she was active in the Somerset Home & School Association. She was an active member of the South Berwick Women's Institute, Weston Welsford Somerset Auxiliary, and always active as a member of the Berwick Baptist Church. In all these organizations mom contributed to fundraising with her baking. Her lemon squares are to die for, her pumpkin pie was second to none and then there was her brown bread which was sought after at bake sales and now a daughter makes her recipe for such occasions. Still there were the Christmas dinners attended by up to 50 of us where her Cassia Bud pickles would disappear in a flash. There are so many fond memories of all the delicious things Mom could make yet one that we have missed since Mom became too ill to continue was the birthday cakes she made for not only her children but her sons and daughters-in-law and then grandchildren. Mom took up cake decorating classes and then taught herself new skills. Some weeks she would have several to make, painstakingly decorating them to make it special for each, and if the cake just happened to not be perfect we never got to see it, after all to her the integrity of her work reflected upon her and she insisted on being her best. As her grandchildren grew Mom became a teacher of her craft teaching her grandchildren who competed in 4-H cake decorating competitions locally and provincially, seeing them succeed gave her great joy. Our mother was a lady of great faith. As busy as her day would be, Mom started her day having breakfast with Dad followed by reading the Daily Bread, reading scripture and saying prayers after all she had a lot of us to pray for. Her faith and prayers gave her strength to see her children and husband through sickness and accidents. Mom was in regular attendance at Sunday service and made sure we children had a firm foundation of faith by getting us to Sunday School, and church. One of Mom and Aunt Shirley's legacies are a number of the beautiful stained glass windows that adorn the Berwick Baptist Church. Mom hosted not only the groups she was a member of into her home for meetings but she and Dad hosted 4-H exchange members. They made lifelong friends with these young people and have kept contact throughout the years. Mom and Dad devoted most of their lives working hard on the farm to provide for their family, but managed to take time to enjoy some trips together. One of the trips they enjoyed the most was a senior's trip to Europe with a stop in Holland. They enjoyed seeing the countryside, the farms and of course the dairies. They always thought there would be time to travel more once they got a bit older sadly life did not go as planned. Margaret is survived by children, Marlene (Ron) Connell, Suzanne (Bev) Spicer, Sherilyn (Lindsay) Kinsman, Joanne (David) Fairfax, Timmy (Susan) Lamb, Byron (Elizabeth) Lamb, Beth (Ric) Hamilton; daughter-in-law, Margie (the late Jimmie) Lamb; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, James; son, Jimmie; her parents; her sister and best friend, Shirley Hennigar. Mom was very blessed to be cared for at home by many wonderful caregivers and her family. Dad insisted that mum would live out her days at home. There are not enough words to express the appreciation we have for those wonderful ladies who took such great care of mom. They showed her respect, treated her with dignity and never viewed her as not being present. They talked to her and engaged with her. From all of us Lambs thank you to the many wonderful caregivers who allowed her to stay in her home until the time of her passing. Special thanks to her most recent team of caregivers Peggy, Dana, Corrine, Erica, Michelle, Bonnie, Andrea, Caitlin and Ronda. Also thanks to Samantha, Anne Marie, Susan M. and Dr. J. Gillis all who have cared for Mom for over the years. God bless each and every one of you. There will be no visitation.
