SANFORD, (Johnson) Margaret Mabel "Peggy" ~ passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, in Northwood Manor in Halifax, at the age of 101.
Peggy was born in Norwood, London, England, in 1923. She met her husband Lee during the Second World War, while he was serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers. They married in June 1944, in Reigate, England. After the war Peggy embarked on a life-changing journey when she arrived in Canada at Pier 21 on April 10th, 1946, to join her husband. They later settled in Kingston, Nova Scotia where she remained until 2015.
Peggy dedicated her time and energy to her family and was a loving and caring mother to her children. She was an active member of the Kingston United Baptist Church and served others through her involvement with the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 98, Kingston. Peggy was also an active participant in the N.S. War Bride's association for many years, where she found kinship and support among fellow war brides who shared similar experiences. Those who had the privilege of knowing Peggy will remember her for her warm smile, her positivity, and her many stories of her life's journey.
Peggy is survived by her children, Fred (Gail), Dartmouth, NS; Margaret MacLellan, Harbour Centre, NS; Robert (Honorah Sheppard), Truro, NS; grandchildren, Angela (Vern) Axford; Tim (Karina) Sanford; Stephan (Stepfanie) MacLellan; Kathy MacLellan (JP Brooker); Jill MacLellan (Matthew MacDougall); David MacLellan (Krissy Brewer); Rebekah Sanford (Tony Fletcher); Sarah Sanford; along with 11 great grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild; and her niece, Sandra Hatten (Rod).
Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Lee Emery Sanford in 2000; her mother, Edith Taylor; stepfather, Fred Taylor; father, Albert Johnson; brother, John Johnson; sister, Honor (Moore); and son-in-law. Allan MacLellan.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the caregivers, nurses, and doctors at Northwood Manor for their exceptional care and compassion over the past nine years.
Memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 15th., in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., toll free 1-855-825-3448. Pastor David Hopper officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment at North Kingston Cemetery. No flowers please, donations may be made in Peggy's memory to the Kingston United Baptist Church.
