Marilyn Sadie Hayes

Marilyn Sadie (Keddy) Hayes, age 87, passed away peacefully at Windsor Elms, Falmouth on May 24, 2026, with her loving family by her side.

Born on January 15, 1939, in the Forties, Marilyn lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty and devotion to her family. While she spent most of her life in Hants Border, Nova Scotia she often spoke fondly of her early years of marriage in New Market, Ontario, where she and her husband worked cattle. Those years remained a source of pride throughout her life, and she never tired of sharing stories of the hard work and dedication that farming required.

Marilyn was a woman of strong convictions, unwavering loyalty and a generous heart. If she found a person she trusted or a place she loved, she remained faithful to them for life. Kind, determined and at times wonderfully stubborn, she touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

Her love of farming began in childhood and continued throughout her life. She often spoke of her years in 4-H, her love of cattle and her fondness for oxen and ox pulls. These memories connected her to her roots and brought her great joy.

Following the loss of her beloved husband, Aubrey Cecil Hayes in 1984, Marilyn demonstrated the strength and determination that would come to define her life. In 1987 she completed her Continuing Care Assistant training and devoted herself to caring for others, bringing the same compassion and dedication to her work that she showed her family every day.

When she wasn't caring for others, Marilyn found joy in quilting, embroidery, gardening, playing cards, attending ox pulls and spending time with the people she loved most. Family gatherings were among her greatest treasures, and she never missed an opportunity to share stories, laughter and memories.

Marilyn was known for her quick wit and sense of humour. One of her favourite jokes was that she would get "carditis" if she went too long without a game of cards. Those who knew her best will remember the smile that accompanied the remark and her love of friendly competition around the card table.

Marilyn was a devoted member of her community and enjoyed being involved in many local organizations. She was an active member of her church, The Hants Border Community Club and the local garden club. Through these groups she formed lasting friendships and contributed her time, energy and kindness to the community she loved.

Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey; infant son, Aubrey Lawson; grandson, Ryan Barkhouse; mother, Marion; father, Lloyd; and brother, Wayne Keddy.

She is survived by her children, Lloyd Hayes (Donna), Betty Anne Barkhouse (Bill), Carolyn Biggin (Dwane) and Karl Hayes (Holly). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Alicia (Fred), Kaleb (Samantha), Dion (Ashley), Desiray, Felicity, Jessica (Brandon), Jonathan (Emma), Connor, Morgan, Jeremy, Steven, Kaylee and 18 great grandchildren; her sister Lucille Keddy and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

To her family she was simply "Nanny". She shared her love through her actions, her stories, her guidance and her unwavering devotion to those she held dear. Her kindness, loyalty, strength and sense of humour will be remembered by all who knew her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Meadowview II at the Windsor Elms for the care, kindness and support they provided to Mom (Nanny) throughout her time there. Their dedication brought comfort to Mom (Nanny) but to her family as well and will always be remembered with gratitude.

Visitation will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 14, in St. Augustine of Hippo Anglican Church, 1587 Forties Rd., the Forties, from where the funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Falen Atwood officiating. Reception will follow in Forties Community Centre. In lieu of flowers donations in Marilyn's memory may be made to the Forties Community Centre or a charity of their choice.
