Marjorie Christene
Morse
April 23, 1928 – September 20, 2022
Marjorie Christene (Grant) (MacLean) Morse was born a "forever" Cape Bretoner on Monday, April 23, 1928, in Glace Bay, NS. She passed away in Kentville, Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
She grew up in Dominion, daughter of the late John Edward Grant (1889-1976) and Annabel (Johnston) Grant (1897-1980). Her siblings were Frank Walker Grant (1920-2011); John Robert Weldon Grant (1922-1943, lost in the Second World War was a wireless operator with Ferry Command); Lorna Jean (late Robert) Bennett (1923-2020); and Ethel Ferne (late Donald) Eagles (1925-2022). A sister, Margaret Kathryn, predeceased her in infancy (1918).
In her childhood, Marjorie earned the nickname "Brosy" by hitching a ride along her street with the milkman, Ambrose, who used a horse and wagon to make deliveries.
Marjorie proudly graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Glace Bay General Hospital Nursing program Class of 1949. Her two sisters graduated from the same program in 1946 and 1948. Marjorie nursed in Glace Bay at the Glace Bay General Hospital and worked privately for doctors practising in the town. After her first husband passed, she moved to Kingston to live with her sister, Ethel, and family, which began an endearing relationship with the Eagles children. She began nursing in the valley at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Middleton. In 1961, Marjorie furthered her education obtaining a Diploma in Public Health through Dalhousie University in 1962. Until 1968, she worked for Public Health from Middleton, covering Eastern Annapolis County.
In 1950, after graduating from nursing, she married Murdoch A. MacLean in Dominion. During their eight happy years of marriage, they had two sons: Allan Grant, Gander, NL (married Sandra Moss, their children Adele MacLean-Butler, Upper Tantallon, NS (married Bob Butler, son MacLean "Mac" Butler) and Mark A. MacLean, High Level, AB (married Melanie Osmond, son William, daughter Sarah). Marjorie's second son, Douglas A., Waterville, NS (married Heather Brydon, their sons Ian D. MacLean, Waterville, NS (married Robin Gates, sons Alex, Mark, and Landen) and Andrew B. MacLean, Fredericton, NB (married Marchell Coulombe, daughters Marjorie Rowyn and Stella, son Oscar, new baby arriving soon). Following the passing of her first husband in 1958, Marjorie married the widowed Dr. Frank W. Morse in 1968. Dr. Morse's children are Elizabeth Ruth, Windsor, NS; the late Dr. David, Lunenburg, NS (married Sharon Comeau, their children Lisa, Halifax, NS (partner Dan Walsh) and Hugh, London, UK (married Valerie Droulers, their son Pascal)); Dr. Peter, Atlantic City, NJ (married Dr. Claudia Resch); and Donald, Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., NS.
After moving to Lawrencetown, Marjorie assisted her husband in his medical practise until his retirement in 1987. Her home was open to assist her husband's patients who had to be in hospital for treatment for extended periods. She cared for children as guests during the parents' absences. Elderly patients, without family close by, were also guests in their home while convalescing.
She was highly active in the Baptist Church Ladies Auxiliary, the Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and in her community.
After retirement, Marjorie and Frank enjoyed winters in Clearwater, Florida where Frank's sister, Mary Low and husband Dick, were successful in drawing them to the warmer climate for ten winters. They very much enjoyed Mary and Dick's company and seeing the Low children and grandchildren, both in Florida and during their summer visits to their cottage in Port Lorne. These two families continue to be close.
After her husband passed in 1999, Marjorie felt strongly that there should be a lasting tribute to the medical and other contributions her late husband and his predecessors made to the Village of Lawrencetown and surrounding area. A public library for the community opened August 2002.
Marjorie lived in her home until 2005. She moved into Orchard View apartments in Berwick to be near her sister Ethel and husband Don, where she lived for 17 years.
Marjorie LOVED babies and little children and would do anything to get a chance to hold a baby. She loved having youngsters visit, with parents of course. She had a wonderful sense of humor and wit. She and her sister, Ethel, always enjoyed a fun banter with each other.
The family wants to thank the EHS ambulance crew that transported her to hospital, the Staff and Doctors of Valley Regional Hospital Emergency Department who cared for her under their trying working conditions and the staff of both Medical A and Medical B.
