It is with great sadness that we announce that Marjorie E Quinn (nee Beard) passed away on 18 th March 2023 at the age of 97 in Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was born in 1926 in Boston, Mass, USA. The only daughter of the late Ralph H Beard of Mass, USA, and Marion E Beard (nee Bishop) of Paradise, Nova Scotia, Canada. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Wing Commander (RAF) Gerald D P Quinn DFM and BAR, her eldest son Frederick W H Quinn, her two brothers Sgt Richard F Beard and his infant twin brother. She is survived by her three children John V Quinn, Olivia E Quinn and Carolyn L Quinn, her sister-in-law Marie Beard, nieces Debra, Teresa (Chris) and nephew Kevin (Jocelyn) as well as many great, great-great nieces and nephews and other extended members of the family.
She will be sadly missed by her three children John, Olivia and Carolyn, other family members and friends. Fly with the Angels our beautiful Mother. Until we meet again.
Our Mother Marjorie was glamorous, a great beauty and was likened to the late actress Elizabeth Taylor. She not only had the voice of an angel, but was an accomplished painter, a great cook and loved nothing more than entertaining and surrounding herself with family and friends. She also enjoyed reading and would diligently do the newspaper crossword every morning. She had a quick wit, did not miss a thing, and remained sharp in mind till the very end.
Marjorie was born in Boston Mass, USA to an American father Ralph and Canadian mother Marion but left the USA as a child with her parents to live in Paradise, Nova Scotia, Canada where her mother was from and where she would remain till her marriage to her British husband Gerald (RAF). She met him a local dance when he was based at Greenwood Airforce Base in Nova Scotia, Canada. Gerald had been taken out of active war service as he had done sufficient ops during the war. He was then posted to Canada to train Canadian pilots on the latest fighter planes. After meeting Marjorie, he swept her off her feet and married her in 1944 at the Paradise Baptist Church. Soon after the wedding Gerald was posted back to The United Kingdom by the RAF. Our newlywed mother, not wanting to be separated from our father and against her family's wishes not to join him until the war was over as it was too dangerous, decided to join him in the UK. She was booked on a merchant ship which was not part of a convoy and undertook a dangerous journey across the Atlantic. Fortunately, she arrived safely at her destination. Marjorie remained in the United Kingdom for the rest of the war and in 1945 just before the war ended, she gave birth to her 1 st Son Frederick. During a return visit to Canada in 1950, she gave birth to her 2 nd son John and in 1953, her 1 st daughter Olivia, when she was back living in the UK. Our mother Marjorie was well travelled as the RAF posted our father Gerald to various parts of the world, namely Singapore where he served as Head of Troops and where she lived for many years with him and her then 3 children. After her return to the UK, she gave birth in 1958 to her last child and daughter Carolyn. Another posting followed a year later, this time to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) where she and Gerald lived for 4 years till Gerald's retirement from the RAF. They then immigrated to South Africa where our mother Marjorie lived for many years till her return to live in Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada where she remained till her death on 18 th March 2023.
John, Olivia, and Carolyn would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and Nurses of both Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton and the Valley Hospital in Kentville for the exceptional care they gave our mom till the very end. We would also like to give a big thank you to Iona Bishop for the visits to the hospital, attending to our mother's needs as well as all the assistance she has given to us. Also, a big thank you to Jocelyn Beard for the visits to the hospital which was greatly appreciated by our mother.
A graveside interment service will be held 11:00am on Thursday, August 24, 2023 in Paradise Cemetery. Rev. Deacon David Hasler officiating. Messages of condolences can be posted on the website of the Middleton Funeral Home. Donations can be made to the Paradise Cemetery or a charity of your choice.
