Mary Margaret
Cormier
September 16, 1941 – October 28, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Margaret Cormier (Power) on October 28, 2024, at the age of 83. Marg was born on September 16, 1941, in Saint John, New Brunswick, to Edward and Gladys Power. At the age of 15, Marg moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to live with her older sister and brother-in-law, Doreen and Dan Olynych.
Marg worked at the Moirs Chocolate Factory in Woodside and attended local dances where she met her future husband, Rudolph Jean-Marie Cormier "Shorty". They were married in 1962 and started a family soon afterward.
In 1967 they moved to CFB Summerside, Prince Edward Island and in 1978 to CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Marg worked for the military Canex stores at each location. She was also involved with the various Mess functions and was active in recreational curling and darts. Her over the top appearances in Winter Carnival skits and plays were legendary.
Marg was known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and embracing the community life that came with being the spouse of a military person. She was equally willing to tell you off as she was to be giving you the shirt off her back. She also enjoyed spending summers with family and friends at her cottage on Sand Lake near Port George. Often there would be reports of naked "mermaids" taking an early morning dip in the lake before anyone woke up.
Marg is survived by her brother, Donnie Power, and her three daughters, Terri (Jeff Bent), Ann Marie (Jim Sutherland), and Claire Cormier. She has four grandchildren – Gillian Bent (Harris Foley), Jenna Bent (Mike Beal), and Jarrett Bent (Megan Bent); and Brody Haskell (Courtney Hardiman) – and one great granddaughter – Blake Charlotte Bent.
She is predeceased by her parents, Edward and Gladys Power; her siblings, Charlie Dempsey, Raymond Power, Doreen Olynych and Larry Power. She was also predeceased by her husband, Rudolph Jean-Marie "Shorty" Cormier (1998) and her son, John Cormier (2007).
There will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, the family asks that you donate to the charity of your choice in Marg's name.
