Obituary

PHEENEY, Mary Jane - age 76 of Middleton passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Middleton, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Donald Muir and Laura (Varner) Reed. Mary Jane was educated in Middleton and then Kings College, Halifax where she obtained her Arts degree majoring in History. She was employed with the Nova Scotia Public Archives after graduation. Later, after her marriage, she and Harold moved to New Brunswick where her family grew and blossomed. As her children grew older, she became a Swimming Official with both Swimming New Brunswick and Swim Canada, where she ultimately reached a Master Official Certification. She loved crafts and was a skilled knitter. Mary Jane enjoyed singing and sang in various school, church and local choirs throughout her years. She loved playing the piano and in later years, enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She and Harold greatly enjoyed travelling and were fortunate to be able to see the sights and experience the local customs while touring both the main and back roads of several different countries. Mary Jane always maintained her interest in local Nova Scotian history and customs, especially that of Middleton and surrounding area. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Harold; daughter, Kathie (Brad) McMorran, Calgary, AB; son, Greg (Lynn) Pheeney, Halifax; grandchildren, Laura McMorran, Thomas McMorran, Harrison Pheeney and Alexander Pheeney. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 6-8 pm Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in Mary Jane's memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Macdonald Museum (Annapolis Valley Historical Society) or Old Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
