Muriel Alice Bent

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mom and grandmother, Muriel (Mim) Alice Bent, on September 23, 2026, at her home, just as she always wished.

Mom was fiercely independent and determined to remain in her own home, where she lived alone, surrounded by the familiar things and memories she loved. She never wanted to leave her home for a nursing home, and she was able to honour that wish with the wonderful support of the VON, who provided her with compassionate and excellent care over many years. She was also blessed to have her son Greg and daughter Shelley close by, helping to make it possible for her to remain at home.

Muriel was born in 1935 in Clarence to Charlie and Pearl Bent. She was the oldest daughter in a close-knit family. She was predeceased by her sister Polly and brother-in-law Harold Bent, and by her younger brother Charles Bent. She is survived by her sister Ferne (David) Donaghy and sister-in-law Flo Bent.

Her greatest pride was her family. She leaves behind her six children, who were incredibly fortunate to have their mother with them well into their 50s, 60s, and 70s:

She will also be lovingly remembered by her nine grandchildren: Jacob and Ben Young; Hazen, Franklyn, Ava, and Lewis Morin; Kelsey and Timmy Shanahan; and Noah Munroe.

One of Mom’s greatest joys came in 2025, when she became a great-grandmother for the first time. She was absolutely ecstatic to welcome Jack William Haynes -Young, son of Ben and Shawn, into the family. Becoming a great-grandmother brought her a special happiness and pride.

Mom was the heart of our family in so many ways. She was spunky, stubborn, fiercely independent, and always true to herself. She had a strong will, a quick wit, and absolutely no filter—she was never afraid to say exactly what was on her mind! That spirit was such a big part of who she was, and although her stubbornness occasionally tested our patience, it also made us smile and gave us so many stories to tell.

We were incredibly blessed to have Mom with us for so many years. She gave us a lifetime of memories, stories, laughter, love, and, of course, a healthy dose of her famous stubbornness. We will miss her dearly, but we will carry her spirit, her humour, and her love with us always.

She lived her life on her own terms, in her own home, surrounded by the people and things that mattered most to her. We are comforted knowing that she was able to leave this world peacefully, at home, just as she wished.

The 6 of us will be having a Celebration of Life for Mom at the North Mountain Meeting House (Clarence Baptist Church) 2659 Clarence Road on Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 1pm to 3pm.
