Obituary

Pauline Elizabeth How (nee Hart) was born in Welling, Kent, England in 1933.  She was the eldest daughter of Jessie (Jeeves) and Bertram Hart and wife of Jim How.

After having studied at Dartford College, she then taught in Shoeburyness before arriving in Nova Scotia in 1959 to teach Physical Education at Edgehill School for Girls (now Kings-Edgehill) in Windsor.  It was there she met her husband, Jim of 59 years.

Pauline was a master with textiles; every curtain, cushion, upholstered sofa in the How home was sewn by her hands. She knit beautiful items, never keeping anything for herself. Antique lace-making bobbins, which she inherited from her Grandmother Susan Jeeves, were quickly put to use after taking lessons up in Louisbourg, Cape Breton. A traditionalist, an avid Royal follower, a volunteer wearing many hats; IODE, Fortress Louisbourg Costume Dept, Anglican Church Altar Guild, Brownie Brown Owl, Historical Societies, Theater Member, etc. Crossword puzzles were completed, tennis matches were not to be missed nor were numerous favourite BBC series. She walked into town daily, loved the stage and ballroom dancing. Pauline was able to stretch a dollar with menu-planning and much baking and her love of Frenchy shopping; frugality remained a way of life, having grown up just east of London during the war years. Letter-writing was her form of communication (with many comical 'asides') unless it was settling down with a cup of tea.

Survived by her sister, Jean Rosemary Hart, Oxfordshire, England; son,  Alyn How (Cathy-Lynn) Belleisle; daughters, Susan Beattie (Dwayne), Ottawa; and Amy How, England; four grandchildren, Lauren Lewis (Chris), Diana Lewis, Emma Beattie (Julianna), Alexander Beattie and great granddaughter, Alina.
