WHALEN, Pearl Louise - Berwick, formerly Kingston, NS, passed on quietly and peacefully, April 3, 2013 at 88 years of age, with Catherine and Dale at her side, at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born on Port Hood Island, NS, Pearl was the daughter of the late Bert Tremaine Smith and Ada Myrtle (Watts) Smith. She was predeceased by her husband Robert. She was also predeceased by her brothers Woodrow, Harold and Bertie, survived by her sister Carroll. Pearl received her education at the Margaret Ann Memorial School on Port Hood Island. Pearl enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division) in 1943, serving until 1945, and being awarded with the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal (1939-1945). She graduated from Maritime Business College and was employed by Furness Withy Steamship Company of Halifax. She married Robert Whalen of Halifax, and they had two sons, Michael and Douglas, and two daughters, Catherine and Karen. They suffered great sorrow, for Douglas passed on in early childhood, Karen at 39 years of age, followed 2 years later by Michael at 50 years of age. She was very proud of their family, Michael (Lina Levesque); Douglas; Catherine (Dale) Saunders; grandson, Timothy, granddaughters, Jillian and Emily; and Karen (James) Billard; granddaughter Olivia. Cremation has taken place and by request, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday April 9, 2013 at the Nictaux Cemetery. Rev. Karen Ralph officiating.
