Obituary

JOHNSON, Philip Lester- 89, Bridgetown, NS,- With saddened hearts we announce the sudden passing of Philip Lester Johnson of Mountain Lea Lodge and formerly of Torbrook Mines. He passed away with his daughters at his side on Thursday, January 5, 2012. Philip was the son of the late Almon Johnson and Alice Johnson-Uhlman and step-father, Mac Uhlman, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Laura Mabel (Banks) Johnson of Mountain Lea Lodge; daughters, Carol (Richard) Denton, Kingston, NS; Susan (Roy) Balcom, Grande Prairie, AB; son, Michael (Judy) Johnson, Squamish, BC; grandsons, Troy (Janet) Denton, Moncton, NB and Trevor Denton (Cindy Robicheau), Digby, NS; Chris (Kelly) Balcom, Morinville, AB, Scott Balcom, Grande Prairie, AB; Andrew, Danny and Nicholas Johnson, Alberta and granddaughter-in-law, Sandra Denton, Edmonton, AB. Great grandchildren, Emily and Nathan Denton, Moncton, NB; Ocean and Jordan O`Neill, Edmonton, AB; Kathleen Balcom, Dartmouth; Riley Balcom , Morinville, AB; Cole, Connor and Liam Balcom, Grande Prairie, AB and great- great grandchild, Landon Robicheau, Edmonton, AB. Philip is survived by sisters, Olga Conrad, Bridgewater and Ada Wentzell, Middleton. He was predeceased by grandson, Matthew Denton, brothers, Wesley and Allison Johnson and, sisters, Orme Woodbury and Olive Uhlman. He was born and raised in Torbrook and served overseas during the Second World War and later was stationed at Camp Aldershot. After leaving the army, he was employed to construct many of the existing building at CFB Greenwood and was then employed as a Civil Servant for over 25 years. As a young man, Philip enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother, Allison. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey and New York Yankee baseball fan. His hobbies were collecting stamps and coins. He loved animals and enjoyed his hobby farm. Following retirement he and Laura could be found camping at many of the local campsites, more so at their favourite spots, Grave's Island and Kejimkujik. Philip was a very quiet and compassionate man who loved his family and always put them first. He was well respected in his community and will be missed by his loving family and friends. Sincere thanks to the compassionate and competent staff at Mountain Lea Lodge for the excellent care he received as a resident there. Visitation will be held 2:00 to 4:00PM, Saturday, January 7, 2012 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448, where the funeral service will be held 2:30PM Sunday, January 8, 2012 with Rev. Bill McLeod officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Interment will be in the Torbrook Mines United Church Cemetery.
