Obituary

ATTREE, Phyllis Elva – age 96 of Middleton, NS peacefully passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 in the Annapolis Community Health Centre. Born in Cambridge, Kings County she was a daughter of the late David and Pearl (Spears) Sawler formerly of North Kingston. When Phyllis was two and half years old the family moved to Granby, Colorado. They lived there for six years and she started school there which was three miles away and rode horse back to school and had to ford the Colorado River which was belly deep to the horses. Later the family motored to the state of Washington and lived there for two years and then the family moved back to Nova Scotia where her father bought a farm in North Kingston. Phyllis graduated from the Yarmouth Hospital in 1942 and worked there as a Registered Nurse in the hospital until her marriage to Sgt. Earl Attree in September of 1943 formerly from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Soon after their marriage he was posted to Dartmouth and then to Iceland in January of 1944 and later was killed in a plane crash in December of 1944. Her son, David, was born in September 1944 and they lived with her parents until Phyllis moved to Middleton with her young son in 1948. She later worked at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton for 24 years retiring in 1984 from the Obstetrical Department. She was involved in many organizations over the years including the Contemporary Seniors Club, Baptist Woman's Club, Garden Club, African Violet Club, Hospital Auxiliary and many more. Phyllis enjoyed travelling and went on many trips to Europe, Iceland, Morocco, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Cuba, across USA and Canada and to Labrador and in 2001 travelled to Australia. She is survived by her son, David Attree, Wilmot; granddaughter Deva Marie McNeill, Halifax; grandson Derek (Melanie) Attree, Ottawa and great grandchildren Ryan McNeill, Halifax and Damien Attree and Leah Attree, both of Ottawa. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Earl in Reykjavik Iceland ; brother Gerald Sawler of St. Catharines, ON and sister Alma Adams of Ottawa, ON. Visitation will be held 6:00pm – 8:00pm , Monday  January 30th , 2017 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448. A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00pm Tuesday  January 31st , 2017 in the Middleton Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Smith and Rev. Norman Hovland officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in Phyllis's memory may be made to the Middleton Baptist Church, Pine Grove Cemetery or Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation.
