WHITMAN, Reta Laura - age 95 of Nictaux, NS passed away Monday, November 14, 2016,​ in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Watford, Lunenburg Co., Reta was a daughter of the late Lorne and Laura (Wentzell) Hazelwood. Reta was a school teacher and after retiring from 35 years of teaching primary in Lawrencetown, she volunteered for 15 years at Annapolis East Elementary School in Middleton. Reta devoted her life to children and teaching and will be remembered for her love of books and reading. She was beloved by her many nieces and nephews and they all enjoyed time with "Aunt Reta" at the cottage on the Bay. She was an active member of the Nictaux Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher and member of the choir as well as church treasurer for many years. Reta is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Richer Lafleche of Meadowvale; and Nadine Spencer of Medicine Hat, Alta.; brother, Beverly (Marlene) Hazelwood of Somerset, NS; sisters, Jeanne Ibsen (Harry, deceased) of Toronto, Ont.; Enid Holmes (Robert deceased) of Moncton, NB; grandchildren, Joey (Krystle), Richard Tyler (Dalyce), Ashley and Joel (Nikki); great grandchildren, Josh, Paris, Alyssa, Braxton, Hudsyn and Willow and step great grandchildren, Dre and Olivia. Besides her parents, Reta was predeceased by her brother, Armand (Leora) and her husband, Frank. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Monday, November 21, 2016 in the Nictaux Baptist Church with Rev. Bill McLeod officiating. Interment will be in the Nictaux Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Donations in memory may be made to Nictaux Baptist Church or to a charity of choice.
