POTTIE, Richard Joseph "Dick" ~ Age 92, of Berwick, Kings Co. It is with deepest sadness, that we the family of the late Richard "Dick" Pottie, announce his peaceful passing and journey home, on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in Valley Hospice, Kentville. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, on June 14, 1931, he was the son of the late George and Catherine (Evong) Pottie.
In his early years, Dick left Cape Breton and headed for the mainland. He always had a feeling he wanted to care for other people, and after a brief illness, decided to train in the medical profession. He trained at the Nova Scotia Sanitorium and became a Certified Nursing Assistant, later working at Western Kings Memorial Hospital, Berwick, for 30 years. He was also a lifetime member of the CNA Association. Dick also cared greatly for the community and was a proud member of the Berwick & District Lions Club, holding various positions including King Lion, in his 30 + years, and was awarded a lifetime membership. He could always be found at the Lions Booth at Berwick Gala Days or running the canteen at Lions functions. He was a long-time faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish, Berwick. A gentle, caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great- great-grandfather. Dick was an avid hunter and loved anything involving deer. He also loved the fiddle and guitar and even did some photography (all self-taught). He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by first wife, the former Rose Antoinette Borgal; siblings, Victor, Andrew, Joseph, Cassy, a brother in infancy; and stepson, Reggie. He is survived by second wife of 41 years, the former Clarice Jean Treby - Timmins, Berwick; siblings, Francis, L'Adroise; Leroy, Dartmouth; Lauchie (Rose Marie), Rockdale; Cyril, L'Ardoise; Cecilia, Sydney; Annie Jane (the late Walter) Martell, Rockdale. He is also survived by daughter, Ann Marie (Rex) Walters, Pinehurst; son, James (Gina) Pottie, Waterville; stepchildren, John (Linda) Timmins, Canning; Kathy (Don) Wright, London, Ont.; Crystal (Gary) Llewellyn, Waterville; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friend, Arthur Salsman.
Cremation has taken place and no visitation at the funeral home. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 18, in Berwick & District Lions Hall, 250 Veterans Drive, Berwick. Pastor Christina Bigelow officiating, with a reception following. A family graveside service will be held in Berwick Cemetery, Berwick, Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Berwick & District Lions Club, Valley Hospice Foundation, or charity of choice. Special thanks to Jennifer Russell (granddaughter) for the loving care she gave her grampie, the doctor and staff at Valley Hospice, the VON for their compassionate care over the last several months and to all who helped in Dick's care.
