Obituary

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Richard Joseph Patrick Ryan, at Valley Regional Hospital on January 26th 2018, with his family by his side.  Born in Saint John, New Brunswick he was the only child of Joseph and Barbara (Power) Ryan.  In his younger years, Rick was an avid and well-rounded sportsman  playing hockey, baseball, and football.  He spent 31 years teaching, touching many lives throughout his career. A true craftsman, Rick turned a broken old farmhouse into not just a home, but a haven for Sherry and himself and for all who visited. His work can be seen in every corner of the house.  An eloquent and articulate wordsmith, Rick loved to talk and with his keen sense of humour, he enjoyed telling stories and jokes, which not everyone got, but he appreciated those who did and enjoyed the "banter." Rick loved to putter, always finding ways to create and enjoy quiet times in his workshop and camp. He was a collector of things, stories and knowledge.  He was a reluctant traveler at first, but after experiencing the joy of other cultures and places, Rick loved to plan trips and see what other places and things he could discover.  He loved experiences of every kind; old and new, especially when in the company of close friends.  Rick is survived by his loving wife Sherry (Hynes); sons, Daniel Ryan, Tantallon; Michael (Katherine Jenkins) Ryan, Wolfville; Nicholas Hynes (Adonys De La Paz), Tantallon; granddaughter, Lilah; aunts, Marguerite Ryan, Dartmouth; Nancy Greene, Dartmouth; uncle Jimmy Power, Halifax; several cousins, nieces and nephews and his canine companion "Cally".  He was predeceased by his parents, his son Jonathan Andrew in infancy and his faithful companion Meadow. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 3, 2018 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902- 825-3448 .  A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the Nictaux Fire Hall, 9349 Highway 10. All are welcome. Donations in Rick's memory may be made to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
