Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Robert Spurgeon Carter following a brief illness.

Rob was the youngest child of the late George Carter and Joan (Nixon) Thornhill. He is survived by his much-adored wife, Janey (Cashin); beloved children, Nicole Carter (Steve Wile), Lori Talbot (Neil), Richard Lyons (Jennifer), Ian Batchelor (Sandra), and Stephanie Corkum (Alex).  He was the cherished Papa of 14 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Jane (John) Melanson, Janet (Clyde) Wells; brother, Kevin (Rosane) Carter; and sisters-in-law, Janet and Connie Carter; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his grandparents, Spurgeon and Margaret (Baltzer) Nixon; George and Irene (Stensrud) Carter; father and mother-in-law, Arthur and Margaret (Burns) Cashin; brothers, Roy and Peter Carter; brother-in-law, David Petch.

Born in Pembrook, Ontario, he moved around to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in his youth. After graduating high school, he moved to Toronto where he married and returned to his Nova Scotian roots in 1988, settling in Berwick.  He joined the Berwick and District Volunteer Fire Department in 1990 where he proudly served for 16 plus years. He was president of the department for a number of years and a certified level one firefighter for both the Berwick Department as well as the Michelin Emergency Response Team. He retired from Michelin in 2019 after 30 years. In addition to golf, he found a new love for cooking and baking.  Rob enjoyed time spent with friends and family at the cottage in Charlos Cove.

A farewell gathering will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday Aug 13, 2024, in Berwick & District Volunteer Fire Hall, 300 Commercial St., Berwick, with words from family and friends at 6:00 p.m. Come enjoy a Keith's and light snacks in Rob's memory. In lieu of flowers, memories may be shared and donations in Rob's memory may be made to the Berwick Food Bank or the Berwick and District Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, 1-855-825-3448. Online guest book may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
