The sons and extended family of Robert Alfred “Bob” Whitman, of Middleton, N.S. are saddened to announce his passing on Saturday, July 11, 2026, while in the gentle care of Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Bob was born in 1935 in the front room of the family homestead on Middle Road, in North Williamston, to be followed by two sisters, Frances and Mary, and a brother, John. His parents were Catherine (nee Gniffen) and Lee Whitman. He attended Acadia University (Class of 1957) and the Nova Scotia Technical College (Class of 1959), to prepare for his career as a professional civil engineer. After a short time with the Canadian Hydrographic Service, including a stint in Baffin Island, he joined the Dominion Atlantic Railroad, which took him to Kentville, where he met Donna. They were married in 1963 and welcomed Brenda while living there. A promotion took them to Montreal, where Bill and Lee were born and he moved his family back to Kentville, which is where Larry was born, to take up a position with the Department of Highways. During his career with the Department of Highways, he worked on or led many projects that will endure, including the Bear River Bridge and the Maitland Bridge, near Shubenacadie. He had great community spirit and was a keen volunteer on many projects, including the original tennis courts in Lawrencetown, the Middleton Curling Club, the Fredericton Rotary Club, and countless ball teams. In fact, baseball was one of his abiding pastimes and many of his road trips were planned around seeing games, as well as family. Although Bob and Donna parted ways in 1988, they reunited in 2010 and were remarried in 2011, sharing a dozen sweetly happy years before her death in 2023. In those years, they attended Larry’s wedding to Kelli in Saint John, and Lee’s wedding to Mike in Ottawa. They leave behind four grandchildren: Bill’s son, Cody and his daughter, Mercia, as well as Larry’s daughters Frankie and Katie. The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Lea Lodge for their excellent care. Memorial donations can be made to the Middleton Curling Club. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 15, in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown, with Rev. Andrew Taylor officiating.
