Obituary

Ronald George Barrett, age 95 passed away early September 11, 2018 in Halifax. Born in Clarence August 27, 1923 he was the son of the late John and Alice (Frame) Barrett. Ron took over the responsibilities of the farm at the very early age of 9 when his father passed away. He was a long-standing member of the Clarence United Baptist Church becoming a Deacon in 1970. He was a well-known Guernsey breeder for over 30 years. During these years and onwards he held the office of president and secretary treasurer of the Nova Scotia Guernsey Breeders and President of the Canadian Guernsey Breeders. He was active in the Annapolis Valley Exhibition and started showing as a 4H member in 1932 and was a continuous participant for about 70 years holding many offices for over 60 of those years. His Guernsey herd was one of the best and he received many awards over the years. He showed at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition, The Maritime Winter Fair, The Atlantic Winter Fair, and the Royal Winter Fair. He also travelled to many countries with the World Association of Guernsey Breeders, becoming an honorary life member in 2002.He was active in the county and provincial Federation of Agriculture being President and Secretary Treasurer over the years. He was also a county councilor for 12 years beginning in 1976. He served on many committees including chairman on the school board and social services. He also served on the Nova Scotia Environmental board for several years. He Joined the I.O.O.F in 1940 and received his 50 year jewel. He also joined the Rebekah's, the sister lodge in 1957. In his retirement years he became an avid curler. He was always active in sports playing hockey in his younger years and as a coach later in life. In 1987 he and Lois started Square dancing a source of enjoyment for both of them. In 2000 he and Lois moved to Port George where they lived till moving to Halifax in 2011. Ron joined Lois at Melville Gardens in 2016.He is survived by his sons, John (Kathy), Ernest (Julie), Stephen (Elizabeth) and a daughter Mary Anne, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) Hogan, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, his sisters, Jean (Carl) Zwicker, Doris (Leslie) Whalley an infant brother and an infant son. Memorial services to be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448 with Rev. Eugene Foster officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Society Maritime Region.
