Obituary

Leddicote, Sheila May (Sweetland) – 93 of Stewiacke, NS passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026, on Archibald Lane, Elk Court, Shannex, Brookfield, NS. Born in Yarcombe, in the county of Devon, England, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Cassie (Evans) Sweetland.

Surviving are her Daughters, Vivienne (David Selig), Springfield, NS; Lynda Harris (Jim Carter), Truro, NS; Elizabeth, Stewiacke, NS; Son, Marty (Norah), Kingston, NS; Sisters, Lena (Bernard "Andy") Andrews, Worthing, England; Jacqueline (Graham) Cridland, Queensland, Australia.

Sheila's heart was never too full to extend her open arms to a larger family, because of that she was proud to say that through love she had 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Proud of every one of them and spoke of them often before speaking of herself.

She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in England, Australia, and New Zealand whom she loved as if they were her own, despite the distance, they remained close in her heart, and she spoke of them and their achievements with pride. Most recently becoming a great-great-great aunt to a beautiful baby boy in the UK.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her Husband, Rev. Major John J. Leddicote; Son, Dean Charles Stewart; Sister and Brother-in-law, Cynthia (Fred) Mitchell; Brothers and Sisters-in-law, William "Bill" (Judy) Sweetland and Michael (Joan) Sweetland; Sons-in-law, Lenlie K. Harris (Lynda), Kingston, and Dean A. Williams, Stewiacke.

Sheila worked with her husband, John, throughout their married life, working as a team in their ministries, fostering many children and animals, supporting her husband and children's sports teams, hobbies, their friends, and families. She was always there when anyone needed her, with a quiet smile and cup of tea. Despite how busy her life was, the door was always open for anyone who needed to have a place of quiet reflection, a chat or a laugh. Sheila was a beautiful soul, who would never let anyone go hungry or unclothed, even if it was providing her only winter coat to someone in need. She always said that she never knew who would be greeting her in the morning in her kitchen, as everyone knew if they needed shelter in the night, the Leddicote house would be open for them. Sheila, along with her husband, spread the meaning of love, laughter, and song to their children and all they called family, whether through dancing, singing, performing or quietly listening to her children and grandchildren play and sing, showcasing the talent that was developed through her and John.

Sheila's solace was outside, in her garden and in nature. She worked hard with John to build a beautiful garden at their home in Stewiacke, with strangers and neighbours regularly stopping to comment and ask questions on the beautiful plants they saw, rarely leaving without a piece of the garden they admired.
