Thompson, Sheilah Christine ~ 86 of Middleton, NS, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS. Born in Middleton on January 10, 1939, she was the youngest daughter of the late Roy and Gladys (MacDonald) Phinney.
As a child, Sheilah lived in Nictaux on the family farm. She attended the Macdonald Consolidated School and then Middleton Regional High School, graduating in 1956. Sheilah then trained as a nurse at Victoria General Hospital, qualifying as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1960. Later that year she started nursing at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Middleton, NS. She then worked in Bathurst, NB at Hotel Dieu Hospital from 1960-1962.
Sheilah was very active in her community. She was a member of the Middleton United Baptist Church since 1969 and was the head of the social committee for many years, organizing countless receptions and dinners. She was a member of the Middleton Curling Club from 1969-2017, curling both recreationally and competitively, and serving as president of the Ladies Curling Club for a 2-year term. She enjoyed golfing and was a long-time member of the Eden Golf and Country Club, serving as the president of Ladies Golf for one term. She delivered Meals on Wheels in Middleton for many years and was active in many local and provincial organizations including the MRHS Band Association, Girl Guides of Canada, the NS Ladies Golf Association, and the NS Ladies Curling Association.
Sheilah married Graham Kenneth Thompson of Nictaux, NS on July 9, 1960. Besides her husband, Graham, she is survived by daughters, Marla, Texas, USA; Jane, Massachusetts, USA; son, Peter, Dartmouth, NS; granddaughters, Nina Mombourquette (Cody McPherson), California, USA; Natalie, Halifax, NS; brother, Richard "Dick" Phinney, Calgary, AB; also numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Sheilah was predeceased by sisters, Audrey Millett, Kathryn Marshall, Jean Dumeah; brothers, Vernon Phinney, Beldon Phinney, Ian Phinney; daughter-in-law, Michelle Thompson (Peter).
The family wishes to thank the staff of Valley Regional Hospital and Soldiers Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion. In addition, we are indebted to countless friends and family members for their hospital visits, support, and prayers particularly over the past few weeks. There are no words to express our heartfelt gratitude to family friend Shyanne Jenkins for so many things, big and small.
A private family interment will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton, May 2025. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date. Donations in Sheilah's memory may be made to Middleton Baptist Church, Macdonald Museum, or Parkinson's Foundation of Canada.
