STEPHEN, Sylvia Regina – age 81, of Kingston, NS passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, October 2, 2017 in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS. Born in Humbermouth, NL she was a daughter of the late Gerald and Hannah (Gushue) Hartery. Sylvia graduated from the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. Later, with her husband Jake, she began "The Big Scoop" restaurant in 1974 from which they retired in 1992. Sylvia was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church in Middleton. She loved gardening and dancing and devoted her life to her taking care of her family. Sylvia will be sadly missed by her husband of 58 years, Jacob "Jake"; daughter Anne Marie Stephen of Saint John, NB; son Craig Stephen of Kitchener, ON and sister Annette Hartery of Toronto, ON. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Gerald. In keeping with Sylvia's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 in St. Monica's Catholic Church with Father Craig Cameron officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the Church hall. Donations in Sylvia's memory may be made to St. Monica's Catholic Church or to a charity of choice.
