Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Teresa Marionette "Googie" Grant (nee Sampson), formerly of Greenwood, NS, at her home in Bedford, NS, on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, one day before her 84th birthday.

Born on April 21, 1940, in Nictaux, NS, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Evelyn Sampson (nee Pitts). Growing up in Greenwood, she was active in many sporting, school and social activities. She graduated from West Kings District High School, and it was fate she met our father Walter (Wally) "Butch" Grant from Nictaux, NS. They were married January 4, 1958. As an Air Force spouse, she moved with Wally, following his career that included postings to Downsview, ON; Gimli, MB; Lahr and Baden, Germany; Sardinia, Italy; Summerside, PE; and Barrington, NS before retiring to Greenwood, NS. Along these travels, her sons Todd and Troy and daughter Tammy were welcomed into the family.

Teresa loved the simple things in life; her family and large circle of friends, a nice cup of tea or coffee, a good game of cards with family, balloons and butterflies, everything Christmas, and oh how she loved to sing. She had a great sense of humour and a great ability to make people laugh, and loved to play pranks on anyone who could handle them. She was well known around Greenwood for her daily walks with Willie, Brandy and Levi and being social along the way, as well as her volunteer work at the Opportunity Shop. She also loved going on drives with Wally throughout the valley, and she had a special love for her furry friends. She loved to get dressed to the nines to join her friends for coffee at the Greenwood Mall Friday afternoons. She was a great cook, and nothing made her happier then cooking up a feast for family gatherings, and sending Wally to the grocery store at midnight when she needed something for her recipes! She always looked forward to her annual visit from the "Greenwood Girls"; her sister, Patricia, and special nieces Jo-Ann and Trudy; these four were a force to be reckoned with! Teresa was so proud of her family and all their achievements and made sure to brag about them and always let them know how much love she had for them.

She is survived by her son, Todd (Karen), Kentville, NS; daughter, Tammy Hiscock (Dave), Bedford, NS; and son, Troy, Porters Lake. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia "Kick" Chamberlain (Ottawa), with whom she had a special bond; and brother, Martin "Bones" Sampson Jr (Geraldine), Saint John, NB; and special Auntie to numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. She was a special grandmother "Ninnie" to Tyler, Meaghan Hines (TJ Beaton) and Emma Hines (Reuben Jensen); and great granddaughters, Lucy Beaton and Maevis Jensen.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Wally; brothers, George "Sonny" and Cornelius "Bird"; sister, Marie; brother-in-law, George "Lemon Heart" Chamberlain; and sisters-in-law, Irene Sampson and Dorothy Sampson.

Our heartfelt gratitude to our sister, Tammy (Tinderelli) and brother-in-law, Dave (Daby) who cared for Mom in their home for over five years as she battled Dementia. Their dedication and selflessness are a testament to their unconditional love for each other. It was Tammy's wish to care for Mom at home and give her the best life possible despite her illness, and she was able to do so with support from her husband and the most amazing caregivers. They had so many wonderful adventures together, creating lasting memories to cherish for years, a tribute to their unbreakable mother-daughter bond. Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Doctor Esther Cogswell and her staff (Jill) for their unending support over the years, as well as Continuing Care, the VON and Palliative Care Doctors and Nurses, who supported our wish to keep Mom at home until her passing. Thanks also to Nancy Stratdee for her unwavering support, day or night, and for taking the time to check in on Mom when Tammy needed not only medical advice, but reassurance as well. Thank you for being a source of comfort during this wild ride. Special thanks to Maura Demoraes, Milena Pimentel, Marcia DoSantos, Tina Clark, Gleide Gadelha, Faith Rideout and Dorothy Herring who spent numerous afternoons with Mom singing their hearts out, eating cookies (which she loved) and other snacks, and having lots of laughs together. We watched in awe and with much love as you all cared for our Mom, always treating her with such dignity, respect, kindness, compassion and most of all love. Each of you brought joy, laughter, light into "Mrs. Magoo's" life and she loved you all unconditionally. We will miss hearing you sing her favourite songs with her, especially her Christmas songs year-round, and the roar of laughter as she had you all in stitches! You've made her darkest days seem brighter and our burdens feel much lighter. You are all superheroes and will always be in our hearts. God bless you all.

Teresa was fortunate to have many supportive friends in her life. A special thanks to Anne Dent and Shirley Houghton, for years of friendship and for always offering a helping hand whenever she needed one after Wally passed away.

In keeping with Teresa's wishes, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the SPCA, or a charity of your choice, in her memory. Cremation has taken place. "A Mother's love has no limits, knows no boundaries, and is unconditional. Memories of my mother keep her and her love alive. Unknowingly, she prepares you for the day her love is tested when she leaves this life. Life isn't the same without her".

Teresa was a very special lady with a big heart, and we will miss her and her beautiful smile. Next time you eat a cookie, see a balloon or butterfly or sing a Christmas song, please think of Teresa.

We love you a bushel and a peck.
