Thomas (Vince)
Vincent Whelan
November 30, 1931 – May 30, 2011
WHELAN, Thomas Vincent "Vince" of Tremont, passed away Monday evening, May 30, 2011 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born November 30, 1931 in Chatham, NB, he was the son of the late Thomas and Irene (McAuley) Whelan. Vince attended St. Michaels Academy and St. Thomas College, of which his mother proudly boasted about his academic achievements. He served in the North Shore N.B. Regiment Reserve Army. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1949 at the age of 18. He served for 23 years at various bases including The Yukon Territory, Germany and Belgium. Vince retired from the armed forces in 1972 and took up the profession of Farrier and Blacksmithing. During his career he shoed horses in all four Atlantic Provinces. In later years he attended many training sessions in the USA and devoted the majority of his time to treating lame horses. He was well known in veterinary circles for both his passion and knowledge of the well-being of the animal. In 1996 Vince was elected to the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame. He was one of only two Canadians at that time to be recognized in this world wide membership listed in the Kentucky Derby Museum. A proud moment for his family, friends and all who knew him. He was such a proud family man. His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were what he was most proud of. He was the best friend anyone could have and was always there for anyone in need and not to mention, he was the funniest man we knew. His family and friends can all attest to his legendary sense of humour. No matter how high an eagle may fly, you can always break a window with a hammer. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie; children, Dawn (Murray); Tom (Margaret); Colleen (Hughie); Kerry (Michelle) and Beth; grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Ryan, Tyler, Caleigh, Daniel and Patrick as well as his great grandchildren, Phelan, Payton and his namesake Vince. He held a very special place in his heart for his niece, Kathy and nephew, Tom. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Danny; sister, Teresa and brother, Ronald. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7:00 to 9:00PM, Friday, June 3, 2011 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00AM Saturday, June 4, 2011 in St. Monicas Roman Catholic Church, Middleton with Father Gerald Saulnier and Rev. Deacon Don Boudreau officiating. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Kingston. By request, family flowers only.
