Violet Louise
Maclellan
September 13, 1937 – February 2, 2023
Born in Halifax September 13, 1937 to Samuel Francis and Mildred Evelyn (Rudge) Short. She passed away February 2, 2023.
Violet, lovingly known as Vi, attended school at St. Joseph's, Halifax, Annapolis Royal Academy and was a member of the first graduating class at St. Patrick's High School in Halifax. She then attended Halifax Vocational School.
Vi met her beloved husband, Hugh MacLellan, originally when he was a Naval recruit in Cornwallis and then met up again while skating at the Halifax Forum, a favourite activity for both. This love of skating was passed along to all 5 of their children. They married 3 years later and celebrated their 65 th anniversary on November 23, 2022.
Along with Hugh, Vi is survived by her 4 sons: Dennis (Judi), Lacomb, AB, Terry (Andrea), Ottawa, ON, Sean, Yarmouth, NS and Bryan, Eastern Passage, NS and a daughter, Shelagh (Richard) Rombaut, Harmony, NS. She will be dearly missed by her 6 grandchildren Scott and Courtney MacLellan, both of Ottawa and Christiaan (Jessica) Rombaut, Sao Paulo, Brasil, Jordan (Luba) Rombaut, Halifax, NS, Victoria Rombaut, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Taylor (Sarah) Rombaut, Chester, NS. Violet's beloved great grandchildren will miss their G Grammy so much, Carolina and Isabella Rombaut, Sao Paulo, Brasil and Miroslav Rombaut, Halifax, NS. Vi is also survived by her much loved sister Midge Short-Gentles and brother Laurie Short along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Wayne and sister Donna.
Violet loved bowling, aquacise, and was a real Hockey Mom! She could be found at the rink most weekends for most of the day. In later years she could be seen at many gyms and fields watching her grandchildren play volleyball, basketball, soccer and rugby. She was known by all as Grammy.
Vi loved to travel. After many years home with 5 children while Hugh was "away at sea" with the Canadian Navy, she finally got to see much of the world with Hugh on several cruises and many bus tours across North America and Europe, where they made many new friends and enjoyed many adventures.
Vi's love of craft fairs, lunches out, reading, getting to the crossword puzzle first, shoes, purses, scarves and pins & earrings for every occasion was epic. Apparently, she also loved Riccola lozenges as they have been found in every nook, cranny and pocket.
Violet always enjoyed time spent with "the girls" from Aquacise. Their get-togethers outside of the pool were always a highlight for her. Thank you to "the girls" for bringing her so much joy and friendship and so much laughter.
Vi always laughed and agreed when Shelagh would say, "I always thought my mother was kinda crazy. Then I had 4 kids of my own and wondered how the heck she stayed so sane."
Special thank you to the nurses and doctors at both 3 rd Floor at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton and in the Medical A section of the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville. Your care and kindness is very much appreciated.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2023 in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Kingston. Rev. Deacon Don Boudreau officiating.
