Virginia Gwendolyn
Crocker
May 3, 1920 – May 9, 2022
Virginia Crocker, aged 102 died Monday, May 9, 2022, in Tideview Terrace, Digby with family by her side.
Born in Freeport, her parents were Walter and Ruby Myrtle (Campbell) Floyd of Massachusetts. In her early years, Virginia spent her summers in Freeport with her grandparents Benjamin and Alice Campbell. She went to school in Massachusetts and sang in the choir of the Dudley Street Baptist Church, Roxbury Mass. Virginia eventually made Freeport her permanent home and married the love of her life, (Joseph) Watson Crocker with whom she raised six children.
Over the years, Virginia was an active member of several Freeport community organizations: Past President and lifetime member of Fair Isle Rebekah Lodge; First President of Freeport Super Seniors; Past President and lifetime member of Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary, Carpriquet Branch; Past Secretary of the Islands Historical Society; member of the Women's Missionary Aid Society; and Past President and lifetime member of the Islands Consolidated Home and School Association. For many years she was the Freeport correspondent for the Digby Courier. During World War II, she was one of the Islands' plane "spotters".
For several years, Virginia and Watson were caretakers of Islands Consolidated School. The Crocker home was a welcoming place and became a boarding spot for many teachers and other people. She loved having company drop in and no one could leave without being offered a meal or a cup of tea. Since childhood, her favourite pastimes were reading, crosswords and doing handcrafts. She was well known for her many beautiful pieces of work. For eighteen years, after the death of Watson in 1982, Virginia enjoyed spending summers at her trailer in Kingston N.S.
She is survived and cherished by her children: Donna (Colin) Campbell, Burlington Ont.; Walter (Diane) Crocker, Middleton N.S.; Floyd (Irene) Crocker, Lower Sackville, N.S.; Loretta Crocker (Tom Frook), Central Grove, N.S.; Wendy (Robert) Daw, Freeport; Bette (Peter) Morehouse, East Ferry, N.S. and loved by her grandchildren: Brian and Ian Campbell; Melanie MacNaughton, Gregory Crocker and Beth McCormack; Scott and Joe Crocker; Melissa Neil and Jeff Outhouse; Jenny Calder and Matthew Daw; Andrew, Jill and Michael Waye; several step grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
We would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Tideview Terrace for the care given to our mother during the last four years of her life as a resident of Sissiboo House. She was cherished by staff and fellow residents. We greatly appreciate the help and compassion that staff have shown the family during this most difficult time.
