Virginia "Hazel"
Dauphinee
December 3, 1919 – May 5, 2021
DAUPHINEE (NEE COLEMAN), Virginia "Hazel" – Age 101 of Nictaux, NS passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at Heart of the Valley Care Centre, Middleton. Born in Nictaux, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Mabel (Sullivan) Coleman. A two-time cancer survivor, the only personal qualities that surpassed Hazel's dedication were her determination and strong will. Hazel was passionate about volunteering, her community, and doing what she could to help those that were worse off than her. In 1988 her volunteer work was recognized by the Lieutenant Governor in a ceremony at Province House at which she received the "Volunteer of the Year" award for Annapolis County. Some of the many organizations in which Hazel spent time as a volunteer include: the Nictaux Firettes; Friendly Neighbours; Annapolis East Canadian Cancer Society (where she was the 2 nd Vice-President); Soldier's Memorial Hospital Canteen (40 years); Middleton & Valley Heart & Stroke Foundation (where she served as President for 3 years); Rebekah Lodge Middleton (Past Noble Grand); 34 years as an assistant with Social Services; and 33 years with White Cross Workers in Bridgetown and Waterville. In addition, she founded an ostomy support group called "Middleton & Valley Satellite" where she was first Vice-President and later President. Hazel also loved gardening, taking great pride in her flower beds and window boxes and was also well known through the Valley at many Avery's Farm Market locations where she sold her dill. One of her other favourite pastimes was visiting people, with the quality of the visit only improving if she could surprise them by showing up unannounced. Hazel also loved music, and rarely turned down the opportunity to attend a Saturday evening hymn sing at a local church, especially if it included a free lunch afterwards. She treasured her time with family and friends, and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by sons, Sherman (Jane) Dauphinee, Yarmouth and Clayton Dauphinee (Madelyn Wiles), Nictaux; grandchildren Scott and Craig (Christopher Gillis) and great grandchildren Brooke and Bryce. She is also lovingly remembered by her niece, Jean Coleman. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Frank and brother, Warren. In keeping with Hazel's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family graveside Service will be held in the Nictaux Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Milne officiating. Donations in memory may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, or a Charity of Choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home; 398 Main St. toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
