AUSSERLEITNER, Walter Josef-89 of Middleton, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2012 in Luzern, Switzerland. Born March 29, 1923 in Linz, Austria, he was the son of the late Josef and Josephina (Ondracek) Ausserleitner. He was educated in Linz and Graz, Austria. In 1952 he and his wife, Martha emigrated to Canada and became Canadian citizens in 1957. After joining the Canadian Army, Walter completed his MA and PhD in History at the Université de Montreal. He taught history at Loyola High School and Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in Montreal. He went to Guyana, South America from 1968 to 1970 to work on educational projects for CIDA. In 1970 he and Martha came to Middleton where Walter taught Social Studies and languages at Middleton Regional High School until his retirement in 1981. Walter was active in the local community; he was a member of St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church, Middleton and St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, Bridgetown. He was also involved in the early days of Annavale Co-op and Credit Union and the Middleton and District Day Care Centre. Walter was a charter member of the Middleton Choral Society and served on the Middleton Town Council, Spring Festival Committee and the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Board. After retirement from teaching at MRHS, he ran a small private school - St. Thomas More Academy for several years. He joined the Middleton Lions Club and served as treasurer for some years. He was a strong supporter of the Annapolis Valley Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. He is survived by his daughter, Waltraud, Luzern, Switzerland and many friends in Europe and Canada. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 52 years the former Martha Strohmeyer. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7:00 to 9:00PM Thursday, July 5, 2012 in Middleton Funeral Home, commencing with a Lions Tribute at 7:00PM; followed by prayers with Rev. Deacon Don Boudreau leading. A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00AM Friday, July 6, 2012 in St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church, Middleton, with Father Gerald Saulnier officiating and Rev. Henry Smolenaars assisting. Interment will be in St. Monica's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in memory may be made to a Charity of Choice or local organizations.
