Obituary

Retired Cst. William Douglas Shields, 66, of South Williamston, NS passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct 30, 2015 surrounded by family at home. Born August 14, 1949 in Ottawa, Ontario, Bill was the second son of Lorne and Audrey Shields. He attended school in Lawrencetown and Middleton, NS before arriving at RCMP Depot in October of 1970. Bill was stationed throughout the Maritime provinces, before finally retiring in Bridgetown, NS after 25 years of dedicated service. Not one for dust under his feet, he started his retirement years by joining the Middleton Town Police until 1997 before being medically discharged. Much of Bill's youth was spent playing sports of all kinds, and cultivating his love for the outdoors by working the family farm. If you needed a cord cut, a field mowed, or a tough bull brought in...Bill was your man. For many years he could be found in the stands, on the ice and behind the bench of local hockey rinks, as a player first and then coach/head cheerleader to sons Alex, Morgan and countless other community youth. A lifelong lover of the Chicago Blackhawks, fudgesicles and the Beatles, Bill was known for his sense of fairness and dry humor, both by family and those he met in a more "professional capacity". Bill will be forever loved, missed and remembered by devoted wife Debbie and children Tanya (Robbie), Alex (Debra), Morgan (Carey), his mother Audrey Shields, brother Bruce Shields (Joy), and sisters Judi (John) Randles, Audrey (Ken) MacDougall, and Leslie (Bill) Small. Kale, Conner, Keegan, Madelyn, Damien, Kolten, Ali, Riley, MacKenzie and Brody are left with invaluable memories of their teddy bear grandfather, with his ever patient ear, comfy lap and sage advice. Bill was predeceased by his father, Lorne Shields. As per Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the RCMP Veteran's Division NS, Mid-Valley Palliative Care, or a charity of your choice. Visitation will be held at Middleton Funeral Home (398 Main St) on Tuesday, Nov 3rd 7-9pm and the celebration of his life will be held at Emmanuel Church (37 Gates Ave, Middleton) on Wednesday, November 4th at 2pm, with Pastor Sweis Ubels officiating and reception to follow. The family would love to hear your favorite memories of Bill, and you can share them by signing the online guestbook: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
