Yvette Marie
King
December 15, 1942 – June 25, 2023
King, Yvette Marie of Greenwood, NS leaves behind a legacy, not that of perfection; but rather, that of excellence, compassion, virtue, honour and grace. [Proverbs 31:10-31]
Eldest surviving daughter of nine, she was born in the French community of Saint Isidore, NB. As a young adult, Yvette became a nurse. While providing care for an injured couple, she met their son, who soon became her future husband. As a new bride, she and her military husband were transferred overseas to France where she gave birth to their first two daughters. Afterwards, they moved to Germany. This move proved to be challenging, since she was away from family and loved ones remaining in Canada, and she did not speak the language. Yet this experience led her to become strong and compassionate towards the struggles of others, in all areas of life – regardless of the circumstance. After being away in Europe for five years, they returned to Canada, landing in the English community of Summerside, PE, where they welcomed their third daughter. From here, they made a final move, settling in the township of Greenwood, NS. She then sought to fully learn the English language. To assist with this goal, she placed her two eldest daughters into English school, allowing her to learn the language through them. This began her ingenuity of overcoming barriers even through unconventional means.
Throughout her lifetime, Yvette cherished each moment of every day, wisely using her time to study, learn, grow, and take on tasks of great magnitude. This evidenced by her commitment to envision, plan, and build a family home. And so, by her husband's side, together they alone adjoined every board and nail. Creating a beautiful, sturdy dwelling, inspired with a flare of European design, using her acquired sewing skills and talents to create impeccable decorations. Completed in her early thirties, while still providing care for her family and three young daughters; with unwavering determination and hope, she never faltered, wearied, nor gave up throughout this extensive four-year project. The uniqueness of this home became a landmark within her community and was abundantly used to serve others. She admirably planted and tended to her own organic garden on the lavish grounds, yielding a steady bounty of fresh vegetables, berries and fruit; these she patiently harvested and preserved for her family and others. Even hosting in-house nutrition cooking classes using her fresh produce, freely distributing her own created recipes which were compiled in an unpublished cookbook. Moreover, she researched and became certified as a Reflexology practitioner and instructor, additionally receiving certification and accreditation as an Iridology practitioner. From her home, she offered both practices, and provided nutritional counselling and supplements, as well. Yvette became known for her gift of helping others to restore, acquire, and maintain a good and healthy lifestyle. She chose never to advertise her services, as she relied solely on a good reputation and quality of service towards others. In spite of living in a military community, with many of her clients moving in and out, she was still able to provide for herself and her family.
Most notably, Yvette greatly honoured and loved the Lord Jesus Christ. Even raising a large elucidated Cross in her backyard. She became a prayer warrior within the Catholic community. For over a decade she led many across Nova Scotia, from Yarmouth to Antigonish, in all-night prayer vigils. Helping others be more present with Jesus. Encouraging them to serve the Lord – not because it was required. But because they would want to. "She glowed in her faith for Jesus" her friends noted. In 2006, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Lyme's Disease, affecting her muscles in excruciating pain and causing her to become bedridden for her remaining 17-years. She drew great strength, resolution, and encouragement from her devoted faith and belief in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and our Blessed Mother Mary, to help her bear this heavy burden. She chose to reside in the house which she built. Although unable to move or get out of bed, her commitment to continue serving others remained steadfast. And so people regularly called upon her, even coming to her bedside, to receive her advice, prayer, and support. In this way, she continued giving of herself to others whenever needed. Many citing "Yvette helped me so much."
As her final day on Earth arrived, God honoured Yvette's many faithful devotions, including her hope to pass on a Sunday - the Lord's Day. And so it was. In the early afternoon of Sunday, June 25th, 2023 she was visited by Rev. Deacon Don Boudreau. He brought to her the Eucharist, Holy Communion - Viaticum. That day she lay peacefully and pain-free in her bed, declining food and drink, but remaining content and alert. Later that evening, Rev Boudreau returned, and by her bedside he prayed, and Blessed her with Holy Water. And so, as loved ones gathered around her bedside, praying aloud while crying silently, her glorious prayers were answered. At age 80, Yvette entered into God's Heavenly Kingdom to meet Jesus face-to-face that same night. Her last words were "I love you."
