Obituary

Dr. Linda Moffat passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in the Annapolis Community Health Centre. She was the wife of the late Burton Leathers (1944-2024). She is survived by her two children, Kate (James) and Neil, as well as by her brothers, Don, Doug, and Dick. Linda Kathryn Moffat was born on September 16, 1944, in Ottawa where her father Robert worked for the federal government during the war. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1946 where brothers were born. Her mother Laura K died in 1962 from chronic emphysema, while Linda was still in high school. Linda attended United College (now called the University of Winnipeg) where she completed a BA in Economics. Linda met Burton Leathers, her husband to be, at United College. In the fall of 1966, Linda and Burton started graduate studies in sociology at Carleton University, and they were married that December. They completed their coursework at Carleton, but never finished their theses because they were both admitted directly into the PhD program in sociology at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) in 1968. Linda left Ithaca in 1972 to begin teaching in the sociology department at McMaster University. While teaching at McMaster, she completed her dissertation and was granted her PhD from Cornell. She then moved to the University of Western Ontario, where she taught from 1973 to 1980. It was during this time that her children Kate and Neil were born. In 1980, the family moved to Massachusetts, where Linda taught at Boston University and Harvard University's School of Business until 1989, when the family returned to Canada. In Ottawa, she worked in the technology sector, consulted for the federal government and was a research associate at Carleton University's Management of Technology program. In 2002 she returned to academics full time, this time teaching Management of Technology at McMaster University, just down the hall from where she had started her teaching career thirty years earlier. In 2004, Burton retired and expressed a desire to move to the classic fixer-upper home they had bought two years before. The question "Why Nova Scotia?" was frequently raised. The answer was simple: they loved the climate, they loved the history, and they loved the community they had found in Granville Centre. They arrived with two trucks full of belongings and spent fifteen years learning how to build a house from the inside out, but when the property became too much work they moved to an 'in town' house in Annapolis Royal. In 2008, Linda lead the creation of the Friends of the Library. Under her leadership, the Friends raised over $200,000 through book sales, donations, and government grants to create a new space for the Library. In recognition of her work with the Friends, Linda was the recipient of the Provincial Volunteer Award for the Town of Annapolis Royal in 2018. Memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 26, in St. George and St. Andrew United Church, 393 St. George St., Annapolis Royal, with Rev. Alex Constable officiating. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to please consider making a donation to either the Friends of the Library, the Historic Gardens, or the University of Winnipeg's Opportunity Fund in Linda's name. Thank you. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448.
