Our Story

The Evangeline Trail of Nova Scotia meanders through the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. The valley is often referred to as Canada's first breadbasket and it is in this beautiful valley of cottages, croplands and orchards that the Middleton Funeral Home (Warren T. Roop Funeral Home) is located. It is situated in the town of Middleton with a population of eighteen hundred people.

The Roop family had provided funeral services for the local community and area since 1880 when Mr. Samuel Roop and Mr. I.M. Shaw operated a wheelwright and funeral service on Bridge Street.

Mr. Samuel Roop's son, Frederick H. Roop graduated from the New England Institute of Embalming in 1912 and continued the business on Main Street. His sons Paul and Warren Roop, both graduated from the Simmons School of Mortuary Science, Syracuse, New York.

Warren and his wife Margaret opened a modern funeral home located at 398 Main Street, Middleton in 1960. He was joined by his son, W. Christopher Roop, also a Simmons graduate in 1964. The funeral home was remodeled in 1991 with the addition of a chapel.

In 2005, the funeral home continued to serve the local area as the Middleton Funeral Home with Thomas Spinney and Gary Marshall, co-owners, who were both previously employed with the Roop family. Today, the funeral home continues with Gary Marshall, owner, maintaining the same tradition of excellent service and compassion and choosing to remain independently owned and operated.
